Green Roof Residence
Massachusetts

This 5500 square foot home is nestled into a meadow clearing on a wooded site located in a rural town near Boston, Massachusetts. The primary living, dining, kitchen and bedroom spaces are organized into a two story glass, wood and zinc clad volume covered with a simple shed roof canopy. These spaces have views to the surrounding woods and to an interior courtyard.

A green roof covers three below grade spaces which contain a three-car garage/mud-room, a large media room and an indoor swim-in-place pool with windows to the terrace. These large spaces are excavated into the hillside, with their vegetated roof segments blended into the grade of the upper meadow in order to reduce their impact on the natural surroundings.

In addition to facilitating pleasing views from the bedroom level, the green roof solution affords two additional technical features that are very important to the client. First, it helps to moderate the temperature of these spaces in all seasons requiring little HVAC and secondly, it provides exceptional acoustical buffering to a state-of-the-art media room.
